PHOTOS: The spectacular, sensational Hearst Castle in San Simeon (updated, now in full size)

I visited Hearst’s legendary Castle in San Simeon this weekend, apparently the third most visited museum in the States.

The construction of this monsterously big mansion – or rather, a conglomerate of mansions, joined together by amazing gardens, pools and foundatins – took forever, costed a fortune, and earned William Randolph an inglorious spot in Citizen Kane.

In fact, Hearst never spent much time in San Simeon. He was more interested in the process of creating the place rather than spending much time there. This might have something to do with the fact that San Simeon is, literally, in the middle of nowhere:
